August 2023 Fun Day

On August 6th the PLSC held a fun dog show for all breeds alongside a 'Meet the Pon' and 'Kennel Club Good Citizen Bronze' assessment.

The event was well organised by Committee members Paula King and Tony Platt, and what a super day it was! Held in a lovely country pub in a sleepy Leicestershire village, with refreshments and Roys Rolls burger hut on hand. The weather was good, the sun shone and we got away with just a few spots of rain.
The fun dog show went well, with many dogs of all shape and size taking part in the classes, with the Sausage Bobbing and Handy Dog (mini agility) giving the biggest laughs of the day.
The Kennel Club Good Citizen Bronze test was well attended by all breeds, with a total of nine PLS who all passed their Bronze award. Thank you to Janine Atkinson who did a stirling job as assessor on the day. All in all a great day was had by all, with lots of laughter and treats and prizes for all attendees.

Here are some photos of the day.

Paul Lang

The PLSC heard of the very tragic passing of our club member Paul Lang on Sunday 29th May 2022. Paul and Christine had their first Polish Lowland Sheepdog in 1996 and Paul was a friendly welcoming face around the show ring and always such a good sport. Paul had been a PLSC committee member and great supporter of the club and breed. Paul will be remembered by all who met him for being a true gentleman and the PLSC sent our sincere condolences to Christine and his family and friends on the news of Pauls passing.
Paul will always be part of PON history when in 2018 at SCCA Championship Show he awarded BOB to 'Hero', who later won the group and then went on to win Best in Show - making history as the first UK PON to do this. Paul was delighted to be the breed judge and was so proud of the accolade for his beloved breed.
Paul was so very honoured to be invited to judge the PLSC Championship Show in October, he later informed us of his illness and was willing to withdraw his appointment however this was declined as we all hoped Paul would be well enough to judge. Come show day on the 16th October he may not be with us in person but he will be in our hearts and thoughts. We will pay tribute to Paul with silence prior to judging.
I will leave you to read the brief profile Paul forwarded for the show schedule :.
"I have always been fortunate to own and be raised with dogs since childhood and
currently have 4 Pons and a lovely, gentle rescue Doberman-crossbreed. Our kennel affix is Dollypeg.
In 1976 my wife and l purchased our First Old English Sheepdog ‘Blue’ from Mrs Betty Tidley of the Gwehelog Kennels in Usk, Wales. We went on to breed occasionally and 20 years later at Christmas 1996, having much admired the breed, we took ownership of our First Polish Lowland Sheepdog puppy ‘Derochas Izi de Belfont’ bred by Val Smith.
I somehow ‘fell’ into showing Izi and later on in 1999 judged Pons & OES at Hereford & County Canine Show. In 2016 l awarded my first set of Challenge Certificates in Polish Lowland Sheepdogs when l judged at WELKS.
I am honoured to be asked to judge at the 2022 PLSC Championship Show and am very much looking forward to it."

Julie Tutton

The PLSC were so very sad to hear that Julie Tutton passed away on 24th May 2022 in hospital following complications after surgery. Julie was a founder member of the PLSC and had her first pon Bella in the 80's. She campaigned Bella on the import register and continued to travel all over the country flying the PLS flag for many years with her other pons who were first and foremost family members. Julie became PLSC Secretary and she worked tirelessly for the breed and club members for many years giving so much time and with great efficiency and then after deciding to hang up her Secretary's hat she became the best club archivist anyone could wish for. Julies other love was 'speedway' where she officiated whilst Rob her husband and Matt and David her two sons participated. Julie was such a great friend to the breed and club and anyone who knew her and she was so proud of her husband Rob, sons Matt and David, and her beloved grandchildren. We send sincere sympathy to her family.

Sad News

We are very sad to have to report that our President, Mrs Ann Arch died on 22 November 2021. As most of you will know Ann was a founder member of the Polish Lowland Sheepdog Club,  being instrumental in the importation of the breed into the UK in the early eighties, along with Megan Butler and Miraslaw Redlicki. She showed great interest in the progress of the Pon and the Club throughout the years that followed, and often came along to Club events. Ann was not only an international judge, she also officiated at Crufts on many occasions, and was delighted to judge the ultimate accolade there, Best In Show in 2001.

Ann was probably best known for her famous Loakespark line of Hungarian Pulies, having previously had great success with Old English Sheepdogs, Komondors and Shih tzu's.

A very popular lady, Ann was down to earth, very approachable, and always happy to help and give advice. Ann served on several of the Kennel Club committees, and was also Secretary of the National Working and Pastoral Society from its foundation in 1967 until she retired in July 2018.

Ann's contribution to the Polish Lowland Sheepdog in the UK was immeasurable, and she will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Rest in peace Ann, God bless.

Covid 19

The club appreciates that some PON owners may be struggling during the pandemic. If any member finds they are unable to look after their PON the club is here to support you and can offer advice and help should you require it.

Ruth Scott

It is with great sadness we learn last month of the passing of our dear friend Ruth Scott who had recently celebrated her 80th birthday.

Ruth was the most wonderful lady whose love of dogs showed no bounds, she was one of the kindest and most genuine people anyone could wish for. Ruth owned the famous Ramberhay affix, producing many fabulous Beardies and PONs. Many of you will remember Ruth and ‘Buffy’, who was from the first litter of Polish Lowland Sheepdogs born in the UK, Buffy (Fama Z Kordegardy in Megsflocks) was a great ambassador for our breed and a real character too, many of the winning dogs today have Buffy back in their lines.

Ruth judged the first PLSC Open Show and was delighted to judge the first PLSC Championship Show in 1997, she also judged internationally. Ruth was a loyal supporter of PONs and the PLSC, sponsoring a prize every year for the BCC winner at our PLSC Ch shows.

Ruth lived and loved her Lhasa’s, Beardies, Pons and Ragdolls, they were all pets first and foremost and enjoyed a wonderful life with her and her partner Ann at their beautiful cottage in Somerset, it is with a very heavy heart I share this very sad news with you all. Sincere condolences to Ann and Ruth’s family.

Vic - a great Chairman and sincere friend to the PLSC

Vic Salt passed away peacefully at home in the early hours of 22nd August 2017. His passing was a great shock particularly to Lynne his wife, and his family and friends. Vic had thoroughly enjoyed judging Bearded Collies on the Saturday 20th August at WKC and had travelled home on Sunday with Lynne after enjoying their caravanning weekend and meeting up with exhibitor’s friends and judges. He was looking forward to their journey to and judging at SKC the following weekend, and had settled down in the evening,  eager to watch the final Olympics and closing ceremony, Vic had always been a traditionalist and very proud of his roots and country.

We are all deeply saddened and will reflect on Vic and his involvement with our breed, the PLSC, and dog world in our own individual ways.

Vic took over as chairman of the PLSC in 2005, and said he was honored to take on the role; he was a fabulous Chairman, in his first year he enjoyed the PLSC Symposium and welcomed overseas visitors, members and friends of our club. He never missed committee meetings and was always eager to be involved with the progress of the breed and club, as newcomers joined he was welcoming and always treated everyone with same respect, happy to pass on his great knowledge of show rules and regulations and his wealth of knowledge in all areas of the dog world. Being show manager too Vic would help and assist anyone at our events, he made sure all was in order for a smooth running show and we gained ‘excellent reports’ from the KC field officers.

Vic and Lynne had were both were absorbed in dogs and had gained knowledge of many breeds, in one instance by running a very busy boarding kennel, but their interest in showing and breeding bought them much success within the dog world. Vic was involved in Rough Collies initially, and then with Lynne they were drawn to BSD and with their enthusiasm and ‘eye for a good dog’ became breed experts and top breeders with their world famous Woodlyn kennel, they were very successful exhibitors breeding many Champions and their breeding admired and sought after worldwide. Champions Woodlyn Penny Black, Black Jack & Black Velvet were just three of the outstanding BSD they bred in the 80’s.

Vic was involved with general and breed committees, but even when he fulfilled a lifelong dream by judging the Pastoral Group at Crufts in 2015, he remained the same, offering everyone a kind word, sharing his lovely sense of humour and always smiling, and continuing to help out the local shows in a stewarding capacity too.

Vic was so proud that all his CC appointments had been gained by the studying of breeds over many years and gaining the numbers to fulfill breed club criteria, he never ‘fast tracked’ and became one of the most respected pastoral judges of all time, always judging with complete integrity, kindness and consideration.

On 31st July, as Chairman of the PLSC, he was keen to attend the seminar and was an assessor of the candidates; he chaired a committee meeting afterwards and thoroughly enjoyed the warmth and joviality throughout the meeting. Vic always smiled and made jokes about taking a packed lunch to the meetings! He was looking forward to the Polish Lowland Sheepdog  Club Open show on Oct 1st, and had made note of the filling for the rolls Lynne  would prepare for the refreshments, and of course Lynne and Sue always ran the ‘kitchen’ and prepared and served our judges their tasty lunches.  Lynne and Vic have always been unstinting in their generosity and support to the PLSC and we are all so grateful for the years he freely gave to the Polish Lowland Sheepdog Club, breed and members.

Vic famous greeting was ‘ay up duck’ and he would tell about an exhibit that had ‘filled him up’ he was unique and was unable to walk through halls at shows for being stopped for - a hug from the ladies or just the chance to be engaged in his anecdotes, memories or down to earth dog conversation.

Lynne and Vic were a devoted couple, they were soul-mates, but when not at shows they loved nothing better than being at home together, looking out from their conservatory into their beautiful garden, enjoying a cup of tea with their little dogs ‘Honey’ and ‘Lara’, giving them hours of pleasure.

Our deepest and sincere condolences to Lynne and Vic’s family, and hopefully Lynne will take great comfort in the precious years she shared with Vic a true gentleman, who will always remain in our kindest thoughts.

Vics funeral will be a celebration of his life and will be held at 3pm on Wednesday Sept 14th at Amber Valley Memorial Park and Crematorium, Derby Rd, Swanick, Derbyshire DE5 9RL, afterwards all will be welcome at The Ormonde Field Golf Club, Codnor, Ripley. DE5 9RG.

Lynne would like to convey her gratitude and appreciation for all the messages, flowers and calls that she has received on Vic’s passing, she is overwhelmed and has been comforted by the support and compassion shown.
